Blowout Day

Recently I have had very few days like today.

Today was one of those days that just went from mundane to stupid without even changing gear.

I spent most of the day working, hunched over my computer, barely noticing as the hours unravelled.

I had eaten a few bananas and a green smoothie with grapes, baby spinach, kale and … that’s about it. A mate of mine came over for coffee and I had water.

So far, so good.

Then it was time for my run. I knew I would be a little tender as I had run fairly hard yesterday and had planned an easy recovery session. My session yesterday must have been deceptively easy because I ran really badly.

In fact I was so sore, I walked most of the way, just hoping I would limber up. It didn’t happen and I limped home trying to find some sort of rhythm and maybe some hope for tomorrow.

Once home, it was off to the supermarket where, inexplicably, I got a little mad. Why? There were no organic vegetables. Sorry, one cucumber. Usually there’s celery and lettuce and all kinds of interesting things.

Today, nothing.

For a while now the service at this particular outlet has been shocking. I guess they’re trying to save a buck like everyone today. But the thing that got me was that the selection of cheap, processed garbage was huge.

Yep … you could buy every beer known to mankind, a hundred varieties of exotic chocolate, white bread rolls sufficient to feed a third world country. Scotch, wine from Chile, Argentina, South Africa and Australia and sickly, digusting baked “treats” guaranteed to fill your system with chemically altered fats. All this in a nation committed to “solving” the scourge of obesity. Go figure!

But not organic vegetables. Because they are expensive and the media keeps telling everyone they are not any more nutritious than ordinary commercially produced fruit and vegetables.

For some reason this situation hit a nerve.

So I did what every spoilt modern day moron would do. I bought wine and chocolate and wine gums and crackers … and prawns and you name it. And I pigged out. Went insane. Ate myself into a coma just about!

I guess I’ll have to work on some issues. But first I’ll try to calm down, dust myself off … and accept that we live in a very confused world. This dependance on supermarkets for “food” has got to end.

I need to find a local farmer and simplify my life. Now I’m off to bed to read and lick my wounds. I will know I have made real progress when I stop feeling the need to punish myself with food!
